Jiquilisco

Jiquilisco is located in the department of Usulutan at 100 kms from San Salvador.

Jiquilisco was founded by tribes Lencas and its name means "men of xiquilite". Between 1536 & 1540 some ships were built here, which later were captained by Rodriguez Cabrillo and led to the discovery of what now is the state of California in the USA.

CESTA (environmental NGO) owns a property in the area, where you can observe sea turtles lay their eggs. Turtle eggs are nested for around 7 to 8 weeks until hatch and then are helped back into the ocean. The whole process is worth observing for both adults and children in order to build environmental conscience and to teach kids not to repeat the same mistakes adults have made, regarding conservation of these species.
